It was a great day to "Learn to do  by Doing."  Sunday, May 2, 2010 at the Richmond Fair Grounds, there were 41 local 4-H members, between the ages of 10 - 17 learning how to clip and show beef cattle.  The day started at 8:00 a.m. with volunteers bringing enough animals, clippers, and blocking chutes for the 41 participants to "Learn to do by Doing" - the 4-H motto.

The participants registered, and were given a goodie bag that contained a show harness, a red T-shirt sponsored by EBI, and other beef related information.  The group gathered for the formal group photograph (above).

At 9:00 a.m. the participant were divided into groups of two or three  with one instructor, one animal and the equipment needed to learn how to clip the beef animals and learn about showmanship.

At 11:30 a.m. the group stopped for lunch and had a Farm Safety Session instructed by Robert Oscelie. The hamburgers for lunch were donated by Dan O'Brien, a local beef farmer,  the 4-H clubs brought drinks and desserts.  After lunch, the 4-H members were divided into groups of four to five participants and were put through their paces at a mini show.  During this part of the event, Carolyn Milne Smith, the judge and an assistant  gave the participants one-on-one instruction on the areas they were very good at and also where they could improve.

There are many volunteers and sponsors to thank for making this day the success that it was.  The animals were brought to the fair grounds free of charge by local farmers, 4H Members and equipment was also donated for the participants to use for the day.

The instructors spent the day teaching and giving advice to the 4-H members.  We had great support from many local businesses and organizations that donated either items or funds to help support this great event.

Quotes from  new  4-H beef members:
"I had a great day, and learned one thing-I need steel toed boots! " ... "Best day I ever had;  I finally got to touch a cow for the first time."

With enthusiasm and participation from the 4-H members, it makes all the planning an easy task. All the new 4-H members went home with a show harness, and everyone got t-shirts, donated by EBI, and door prizes. Many made new friends and got great ideas for the 2010 show/4-H season.
